15 foods you should never store in your refrigerator

1. Potatoes

A cool, dark place is great for storing potatoes, but the refrigerator is too cold: Chilling potatoes causes the starch to break down and make them grainy; in the refrigerator, the starch also converts to sugar, further reducing the flavor.

2. Onion

Storing onions in the refrigerator will keep them from spoiling as quickly as leaving them on the counter. Before you know it, they will go moldy and mushy. When storing onions, keep them out of direct sunlight and at room temperature. Once onions are peeled and cut, they should be refrigerated. Store in a sealable bag in the crisper.
