In 1899, Wilbur and Orville Wright built the Wright Flyer, which the Smithsonian described as "the first powered heavier-than-air machine to achieve sustained, controlled flight with a pilot on board." It was also difficult to fly; he attempted to fly it four times, but failed.

It was the Soviets who created the Yakovlev Yak-38 in the 1930s. Unfortunately, it didn't meet all the standards of the Royal Navy: it could only stay in the air for 15 minutes when it was hot outside.
