Samuel Pierpont designed a 52 horsepower, mile-high airplane with a good power-to-weight ratio in 1901. But the plane landed twice on the Potomac River.

The aircraft was designed to hunt vermin. Imagine this little plane attached to a much larger plane launched into the air to face off against enemy planes. Sounds great, but it didn't work as expected. These little planes were destroyed during the battle.
