The deformed cartilage causes the ears to fold, giving them an owl-like appearance. Scottish Folds were sometimes called Lops or Lop-Eared before the 1960s. They are said to have a feathery appearance. It was in 1966 that the Scottish Fold became known as the Scottish Fold.
The Scottish Fold, a white barn cat, had a mutation in its ears that made it a new breed. Scottish Fold kittens born with the same folded ears were registered as a new breed. For this reason, Scottish Fold cats have also been crossbred with British Shorthairs and American Shorthairs. However, Scottish Folds are prone to mites and deafness.
