Game of Thrones absolutely requires green screens to represent dragons and the Wall, and HBO's big budget allowed Jon and the Wildlings to climb the Wall in Season 3. From what I understand, the ground was only 30 feet away from the vertical wall used for the scene, not 300 feet.

Bill Nighy did a great job playing Davy Jones, but the character wasn't as animated (literally) as we expected, and it's clear from this photo that it was all computer generated, and we were expecting prosthetics and even a wig.
