Advances in fighter design led to the MiG-17, which grew larger and intimidated American pilots in Vietnam. The Americans had the advantage in performance, but when it came to agility, the MiG was in a class of its own.
In the early days, the more agile, cannon-armed MiGs proved lethal against the missile-reliant American planes. Remember the intro to "Top Gun"? In later years, the US's superior tactics mixed with superior fighter planes gave them the upper hand again.
