The F9F marked Grumman's debut in jet fighter production. The fighter was a huge success and served as the backbone of the U.S. Navy's carrier-based aviation fleet for over a decade. Despite advances in jet design, Grumman stuck with the straight-wing design,
resulting in the F9 Cougar. Despite these shortcomings, the F9 flew 78,000 missions over Korea. However, the Panther's greatest achievement was shooting down many MiG-15s, no easy target.
