The F4D Skyray's claim to fame is its speed, even though it never saw active service. It was the first carrier-based fighter to reach a top speed of 752 mph. When it was commissioned in 1956, it gave the U.S. Navy its first experience with supersonic flight.
The first F4Ds used Westinghouse J40 jets, which were later upgraded to J57 turbojets for increased reliability. Despite being the fastest aircraft in the world, the F4D ended its life in 1964. Its successor, the Mach 2 F5D, was subsequently canceled.
